"variables II" is a performative sound installation for 4 - 6 participants. The sound of the distant background noise of a city is converted into impulses of varying lengths, frequencies and volumes and played back through a quadraphonic loudspeaker setup. The individual hearing impression can be actively changed via custom made modules that the participants carry on their shoulders. Text fragments guide the group of listeners through the room for a certain time, raise questions on the transition between noise and silence, inside and outside and initiate a reflection on the processes of localization and orientation.
