Brückenmusik 17, Cologne 08.07.2011
This composition was developed for four loudspeakers
mounted on four rowing boats navigating the River Rhine,
primarily beneath the Deutzer Brücke. The work is based on
recorded sounds of sirens and their formal principles:
slow wailing, alternating signals, and sustained tones.
Referencing both everyday alarm signals and the
mythological figure of a singing mermaid the siren sounds
activate the architectural space between the river’s
surface and the bridge.
Commissioned and presented in the framework of
Brückenmusik 17, Cologne, 08.07.2011.
