LANDSCHAFT / HÖREN

Sound walk for individual participants, 8 loudspeakers, text score
Terranova Speedway near Glesch / Bergheim, 30.8.2026
as part of the exhibition project "Muschelblume und Blei",

Landschaft/Hören is a walking score for a re-naturalized landscape along the Terra Nova Speedway near Bergheim, Germany. The area in which the performance takes place is composed of tertiary excavation material from the nearby open-cast lignite mining sites and modelled as a dune-like landscape crossed by narrow paths.
Eight grey loudspeakers on water sprinkler tripods are distributed throughout the area. They emit minimal acoustic interventions, both echoing and contrasting with the existing soundscape of distant traffic, airplanes, and wind. Often very subtle, the perception of these sound signals shifts with changes in distance, elevation, and wind direction.
Each participant receives a multi-page score containing a map. The score combines listening exercises with fragments from Gilles Clément’s Manifeste du Tiers Paysage.
Clément’s concept of the “third landscape” describes marginal or abandoned spaces, such as wastelands and roadside margins, which become sites where dynamic, heterogeneous forms of biodiversity can emerge.
The text fragments are juxtaposed with exercises that extend this idea into the auditory field, directing attention towards the in-between, the peripheral, and the barely perceptible: a third space of listening.
